This shining Metallic black stone is a heavy and relatively hard ferric oxide with a high iron content (70%). Hematite’s brilliant lustre makes it a very attractive jewelry and handcrafted carving. In antiquity, hematite (Greek: blood) was used as an amulet against bleeding. It was said to help maintain balance between body, spirit and soul. Hematite occurrences are found in parts of the Yukon, Labrador, Quebec, B.C., and Brazil.
